Online hypnotherapy: how sessions by video work

Maybe there’s no hypnotherapist near you. Maybe there is, but getting there after work is the last thing you need. Or maybe the thought of sitting in a stranger’s waiting room is part of the problem. Online hypnotherapy takes all of that out of the way.

All of my sessions are hypnotherapy online, by video. My practice is in Adelaide, and I see people from all over Australia this way. Here’s what to expect, what you’ll need, and the honest answer to whether it works as well as sitting in the same room.

How an online session works

A session by video follows the same shape as one in a consulting room. We start by talking: how your week went, what’s changed, what we’re working on today. Then I guide you into hypnosis. You sit or lie back, close your eyes and listen through your headphones. You’re relaxed and focused, you can hear everything, and you can open your eyes and stop at any point.

When we finish, I bring you back, we talk through what you noticed, and I explain what to practise before next time. After your sessions you receive an audio recording to listen to between appointments.

  1. A free 15-minute call

You request a time window: morning, afternoon, evening or anytime. I ring you within 24 hours. We talk about what’s going on, and I tell you honestly whether I think I can help. Ask me anything you like about hypnosis too, such as how it feels or whether you stay in charge.

  2. Your program or plan

Most issues suit a 4-session program. Some need a longer treatment plan, which we build together in your first session. You know the total cost before you commit.

  3. Sessions by video and an audio to take home

I send you a link. You click it at the agreed time and we start. No software to learn, no travel. After your sessions you receive an audio recording to listen to between appointments, and you’ll learn simple self-hypnosis too.

What you need

  • A laptop, tablet or computer with a camera. A phone works, but a bigger screen is easier.
  • A reliable internet connection. Home broadband or a strong mobile signal is fine.
  • Headphones or earbuds. They make a real difference: my voice is clearer and the room fades away.
  • A quiet, private room where you won’t be interrupted for the length of the session.
  • A comfortable chair or couch where you can lean back. Somewhere you could doze off without falling over.

Put your phone on silent, close the door, and let the people you live with know you’re not to be disturbed. That’s all the preparation it takes. Sessions run on Google Meet. I send you a link beforehand; on a computer it opens in your browser with nothing to install, and on a phone or tablet you use the free Google Meet app.

Privacy on video

What you tell me stays between us. I take sessions from a private room, with headphones, so nobody on my side hears you. Your side matters too. If you share a house, a closed door and headphones help, and some people use their parked car when home isn’t private enough.

Confidentiality has the usual limits that apply to any health practitioner: if I believed you or someone else was at serious risk of harm, I would act on that. I’ll explain this on our first call so there are no surprises. Sessions are only ever audio or video recorded if you agree to it in writing first. Your notes and any recordings are kept confidential and stored securely.

Does hypnotherapy work online?

Hypnosis depends on two things: your attention, and what we do together while you’re focused. Neither needs us to share a room. You hear my voice, I watch how you respond, and we adjust as we go. That’s the same process whether I’m across the desk or across the country.

I’ll be straight with you about the evidence. Research that compares online hypnotherapy directly with face-to-face sessions is still limited, so I won’t quote you a number. What I can say is that plenty of people find it easier to relax in their own home, on their own couch, with no drive afterwards. For someone with agoraphobia, social anxiety or a crushing schedule, that can be the difference between getting help and not.

If it turns out video isn’t working for you, tell me. We’ll change the setup, and if it still isn’t right, I’ll say so and help you find another option.

Online hypnotherapy across Australia, in every time zone

It doesn’t matter which state or territory you live in: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, the ACT or the Northern Territory. Regional and remote clients get exactly the same sessions as anyone in a capital city.

My practice runs on Adelaide time. Australia has three standard time zones, and daylight saving shifts things further, because Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory don’t change their clocks. You don’t need to work any of that out. When you request a call, just pick morning, afternoon, evening or anytime in your own time, and I’ll ring you then. We’ll confirm session times in your local time too.

What it costs

Online sessions are $300 each, or $250 a session when you pay for a program upfront. A 4-session program is $1,000 upfront, or $1,200 paid as you go. Quit smoking and quit vaping are a $590 program. Pay by card or bank transfer. Prices are in AUD, and no GST applies. Full pricing and terms

Questions about online sessions

Will I lose control during a video session?

No. You hear everything, remember it, and can open your eyes and stop whenever you choose. If the connection drops, you simply come back to normal awareness, as you would after a daydream, and I call you back.

What if my internet cuts out?

We agree a backup before we start, usually a phone call. If the video drops, I ring you and we pick up where we left off.

Can I have a session from work or in my car?

A private room is best. A parked car can work well if home isn’t private. Please never join while driving, and avoid shared offices where you might be interrupted.

Do I need to be good with technology?

No. If you can open a link in an email or text, you can join a session. I’ll help you test the setup if you’d like.
